Usability Testing is the process of evaluating a given software or web application’s effectiveness with intended end users against defined design specifications, business objectives and requirements. Designers and developers of these applications use this information to fix potential problems and make improvements to increase their chances of success upon final release.

How Is Usability Testing Conducted?

Each usability test is conducted based on the nature of the software or web application and the end-user it is intended for. While no two tests are exactly alike, all follow these basic principles outlined below.

  1. With the audience and the conditions established, the application’s design specifications and features are examined.
  2. Key functions, features and overall intended use are taken into consideration and test objectives are formed.
  3. With the test objectives in place, the usability test is designed under experimental rigor. Tasks or scenarios based on the defined objectives are created for the test participants.
  4. The test participants work through the tasks using the actual application or a prototype, provide their feedback to a test moderator who both observes actions and records what is seen and said during the test.

The objective during the test is to gather both quantitative and qualitative data that is documented and later used as a foundation to make strategic decisions regarding the implementation and use of the software or web application.
